At last, original Baroque music
written specifically for the piano
Lodovico Giustini is best known as the first composer to write specifically for
the pianoforte. He was born on December 12, 1685 in Pistoia, Italy
and died there on February 7, 1743. His collaboration with Bartolomeo
Cristofori, the inventor of the piano, resulted in 12 solo sonatas
for this then new instrument. Published in 1732 in Florence, Italy,
they provide a unique opportunity to perform authentic Baroque
music for the piano. Already available in facsimile form, they
are now available in an easier to read modern edition prepared
by Dominique Ferran.
These Sonatas provide an original and charming addition to any
pianist's recital repertoire and of course are delightful for
the harpsichord and clavichord.
